Professor Groove’s Saturday Nights at Blue Beat 2012

Professor Groove & The Booty Affair are finally back with a regular residency that has the potential to rival their legendary stints at the Harbourside Brasserie and Kinselas. The venue is a brand new live music club called Blue Beat in Double Bay, Sydney, and the Professor has been warming up weekends since mid-December.

Now about to concentrate on Saturday nights from February onwards the Professor plays 3 sets of his inimitable hybrid of funk, dance, boogie, rap and soul from 10pm until late, usually 1:30/2am.

With an A-Grade Booty Affair comprising long term alumni Josh Beagley (guitar and synths), Michael di Francesco (bass and synth bass), Terepai Richmond (drums) and Rich “Diamond Cut” Sanford (synths, talkbox) joined weekly by guests from the onestopfunkshop family like Berni Love, Don Dolla, Paula “Miss P” Baxter and Juanita Tippins (Confection) this is a serious funk showdown EVERY week.

Professor Groove & The Booty Affair “Love Story (Dang Dang Diggity)”

Professor Groove & The Booty Affair "Love Story (Dang Dang Diggity)"

Love Story (Dang Dang Diggity) - Single - Professor Groove & The Booty Affair

Professor Groove & The Booty Affair are finally back with some brand new freakfunk, and as always it is worth the wait…

“Don’t fight the funk, don’t show no shame!”

”Love Story” sees the Professor takes a stroll through his old school days with a captivating story rap that brings to mind the work of rap pioneers Spoonie G and The Sugarhill Gang.

Already getting good rotation on FBI Radio, we hear The Booty Affair laying down a languid, percussion and slapbass-fuelled slow groove as The Professor tells us of his drug-riddled youth and sexual misadventures with a hussy called Louise.

“I’m a fly guy who likes to go too far”

It’s all great fun and downright funkfilled, capped off with an insanely catchy “Dang dang diggity” chant.

PG&TBA are a Sydney institution: flagbearers of the freakfunk since the late 90’s, home and playground of some of Sydney’s best musicians and always recognised as one of the most awesome live experiences around, consistently rocking crowds with their marathons of funk since their legendary early residencies at Kinselas and The Harbourside Brasserie.

They effortlessly conjure up a dancefloor-filling groove that sounds like the Chemical Brothers, James Brown, Prince and the Sugarhill Gang all showed up for the same gig and are fighting it out for supremacy on stage. The Professor is a captivating presence – alternating between amped up party master, old school rapper and straight up raw funksoul power. And the band’s combination of electrofunk synth madness with genuine live funk is unique and unparalleled.

Professor Groove & The Booty Affair “Fat Woman EP”

Professor Groove & The Booty Affair "Fat Woman EP"

Fat Woman - Professor Groove & The Booty Affair

The Fat Woman EP features the single  “Fat Woman” along with live favourites “Rubbity Dub,” “Hobbit” and “Elvis Is Dead,” and two extended mixes.

With a sound that’s influenced by Rick James, Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five, Zapp and Prince, the sound is funky as hell and brings a few smiles to the mix with the Professor’s paeans to his “supersized, heavy hitting lover” sliding through. And when he tells the object of his affections that “I’m like your puppet, You’re like my hobbit,” we know we are dealing with a sly, evil, intelligent kind of funk.

The Professor rants…..

“Say it Loud! The Professor is a Feminist and Proud!”

“Wake up! Fat is STILL a feminist issue. And now its Professor Groove and the Booty Affair’s issue too.

What EVER happened to feminism? Things looked pretty good in thesixties and seventies. Simone De Beauvoir, Betty Freidan, Germaine Greer… good times, good times.

Now what’ve we got? Bullshit thats what. Things are worse for fat chicks than they have ever been. Catherine Lumby? She thinks porn is ”liberating.” Bell hooks? Judith Butler? Who can even understand what they’re on about? GOD help us. Lipstick feminists so pleased to be wearing their strappy sandals and fuck-me boots.

FAT WOMAN is the Professor’s Call to Arms! Fat Chicks rise up! Time to stop worrying about your size and start jiggling those thighs.”
